Have you ever worked out how much you spend on insurance? Try totting up your premiums – we suspect you'll be surprised! You'll be even more surprised to discover that there's a probability that you've also duplicated some of the cover you're paying for. Cut the duplication out and you're certain to save money. Lots of people have insurance cover for legal expenses, loss of income, theft, even death, without even realising it. This can arise because many of us don't fully understand what's covered by the policies we have, especially if the policies had been arranged for us by financial advisers and brokers. In a recent survey, The Financial Services Authority (FSA) discovered that optional extras such as breakdown recovery and legal expense cover, were frequently added to car insurance without checking whether the policyholder was already covered. It's also not uncommon to find that people with Permanent Medical Insurance have duplicated their cover via payment protection policies taken out specifically to cover their monthly payments on mortgages, loans and credit cards. The point is that if they claim on their Permanent Medical Insurance, their payout will be reduced because part of their claim is also insured through their payment protection policies – so their payment protection insurance is really a waste of money. The Financial Ombudsman has confirmed this saying, “People often contact us when they find themselves over-insured. They often do not realise until they make a claim that they have been paying for a policy that provides very little, if any, benefit”. There's also ample of evidence that some of us simply don't understand what we're actually insured for! For example, take the case of Amanda Lariviere from West Yorkshire. Amanda, aged 42 and mother of two, is recovering from ovarian cancer and had an allergic reaction to chemotherapy which kept her off work. Out of the blue she received an unwelcome tax bill so she decided to visit her building society to find out if she could raise some cash by re-mortgaging. The adviser at the Society wisely asked her to bring with her, her life insurance policies so that they could be used to support her re-mortgage application. So imagine Amanda's surprise and delight when the adviser explained that her policies with Norwich Union and Scottish Provident, which had been costing her Ј80 per month, were not life insurance policies at all – they were actually critical illness policies with a combined insured value of Ј100,000. She was able to claim on these policies and the Ј100,000 she received was sufficient to pay off most of her mortgage and her tax bill! Here's some typical insurance policies to check out. Critical Illness Insurance Critical Illness insurance is often sold as an optional extra within a life insurance policy. In fact that's usually the cheapest way to buy it. However, some enlightened employers already provide critical illness insurance as part of their employment package. Ask your employer if you are one of the lucky ones! Life Insurance Some employers also provide life insurance cover within their pension schemes. It's called death-in-service benefit and typically pays out a tax-free lump sum worth 3 to 4 times the annual salary if the employee were to die whilst employed by the company. Permanent Medical Insurance and Payment Protection Insurance Permanent Medical Insurance (PMI) is also known by some people as Income Protection Insurance. PMI pays out the insured monthly sum if the policyholder is off work due to illness due to one of a wide range of specified illnesses - and some policies will even pay out during redundancy. PMI policies pay out indefinitely or at least until the policy comes to the end of its insured term. Few appreciate is that PMI actually eliminates the need for Payment Protection insurance – the sort of insurance frequently sold alongside loans, credit cards and mortgages to maintain monthly payments if you are off sick, have an accident or are made redundant. Indeed, you can't make a claim against more than one policy for the same event – only one policy will agree to pay out! (All the others will reduce their payouts to the value of the money you are receiving from your other policies) Mobile Phone Insurance Normally mobile phone policies have a hefty excess – rarely less than Ј50. You could be better saving the insurance and changing to a pay-as-you-go plan. Legal Expense Insurance Insurance for legal expenses relating to disputes concerning your home will usually be included free of charge within your home and contents insurance policy. Most car insurance policies provide legal expense cover as an optional extra – others even include it as standard. Some trade unions and professional associations sometimes include access to legal advice as part of their service to their members. Check these out before you pay for more cover! Insurance for ID Theft According to “Which”, the consumer magazine, you are only legally responsible for the first Ј50 if your identity is stolen. Is it worth insuring for a Ј50 risk? Incidentally, my bank has just given me this insurance for free! Automatic cover for credit card purchases Many credit cards automatically insure your purchases for a set period of time after you've shopped. Barclaycard is a good example. If you used Barclaycard to buy something valued between Ј50 and Ј2,000, you're insured against theft and accidental damage for the next 60 days.

Beating the s p 500 with stock market timing
Copyright 2006 Equitrend, Inc. Approximately 75% of fund managers do not beat the S&P 500 year in and year out. How can a basket of 500 hundred stocks beat the majority of actively managed mutual funds? The people who manage these funds are, for the most part, brilliant people. They are highly educated and have access to the most advanced information and decision support systems in the world. So why is it that they do not outperform the S&P 500? A Quick Test: Here's a very crude test of management performance: Let's compare the domestic-equity mutual fund performance supplied by Morningstar against the S&P 500 index for one, three, five and ten-year periods, looking back from April 30, 1995. The S&P 500 index is a fair comparison for large, domestic companies. Our results: --Of the 1,097 funds Morningstar covered for the one-year period, 110 beat the S&P 500, while 987 fell short. Results ranged from 46.84% to -32.26%, while the S&P 500 attained a 17.44% return. --During the three-year period, the S&P 500 returned 10.54%, while results in the funds varied from 29.28% to -15.02% compounded annually. Of the total 609 funds, only 266 beat the S&P 500. --Shifting to the five-year period, of 470 funds, 204 beat the S&P 500. Results ranged from 27.35% to -8.51%, while the index racked up 12.62%. --At ten years, only 56 of 262 funds managed to beat the index, and results varied from 24.77% to -4.06% compounded annually against 14.78% for the S&P 500. The fact that most funds do not beat the overall stock market should not be surprising. Since the majority of money invested in the stock market comes from mutual funds, it would be mathematically impossible for the majority all of these funds to out perform the market. The implied promise held out to investors in actively managed mutual funds is that in exchange for higher fees (relative to index funds), the actively managed fund will deliver superior market performance. There are a host of barriers to fulfilling this implied promise. Some of the problems are: --The larger a mutual fund gets, the more difficult it becomes to deliver exceptional performance. --Although fund size runs counter to performance, fund managers have a strong motivation to let the fund grow as big as possible because the bigger the fund gets, the more money the fund managers make. --Most skillful mutual fund managers are hired away by hedge funds, where their financial rewards are greater and there are few restrictions on investment techniques. --By law mutual funds are supposed to be conservative, which in theory limits their potential losses. This conservative stance generally limits their ability to use arbitrage, options, or shorting stocks. Can You Do Better? Because of the general inflexibility and restrictions of most mutual funds, your investment capital is not properly hedged against market fluctuations. In most cases, if you compared the beta of the equity exposure held in actively managed mutual funds to an equal equity exposure to the S&P 500 index, your reward/risk ratio would be less rewarding than purchasing an identical equity exposure to the S&P 500 index. So, the answer is, you can do better and beat the S & P 500 by using an effective stock market timing system.
The top ten marketing tips you don t want to overlook
1bine Emotion and Logic Consumers buy because the want to experience the benefits of the product or service you have to offer. Evoke those feeling that your clients will experience once they have the product in their hands... and you’ve made a sale. It isn’t until after the sale that they want to justify the purchase. Prepare them with the logical aspects of the purchase before they get the after-the-sale-blues. 2. Apply The 80/20 Advertising Principal You never want to put yourself out on a limb when you are experimenting with the market. That could spell disaster! Keep 80 percent of your advertising budget working tried and true methods, while you mine for gold with the remaining 20 percent. 3. Go For Dynamic Small Ads Do you need to cut advertising expenses? You’ll be happy to know that cutting down on the size of an ad doesn’t mean you’ll be trimming your profits as well! Bigger isn’t always better. Think about this... small ads have less potential for distracting your readers from the main point. That could be the blessing in disguise you’ve been looking for. 4. Market With Postcards Postcards are personal, quick to read, and make an impactpare them to other advertisements you receive in the mail... If you’re like me, you probably don’t even know what they look like. When I identify them as advertisements, I automatically pitch them... without opening the envelope. Postcards carry high-impact messages, and guarantee a 100 percent level of consumer exposure. 5. Call To Action The call to action is one of the most important parts of your advertising copy. Don’t wimp out on it! Spend time combining words and phrases to get the one with just the right impact. Remember, you’re trying to get the reader out of his chair ready to buy. It’ll take a stimulating sales copy to do the trick. 6. Surprise, Surprise! We all like surprises. Keep one on the back burner, ready to present near the end of a sale. You'll be sweetening the deal, and your prospective buyer will be pleased! 7. Send a Thank You. Have you ever received a personal thank you from a place of business after you purchased a product? Hey, it makes you feel appreciated. The impact of a hand-written or personalize thank you lasts long after the newness of the product wears off. The next time you head out to buy... yeah, you’ll be going back!
Protecting your family from fire hazards in your home
: The Home Safety Council reports that fires and burns are the third leading cause of home injury in the United States. The sad fact is, much of the time, these fires could have been prevented. Many homeowners have fire alarm systems and - while the fire alarms are effective in notifying you and your monitoring company of a fire in progress - the alarms don't prevent fires. Don't put yourself and your family at unnecessary risk. If you know where the primary trouble spots for fire are, you can do a room-by-room assessment and make any needed changes before you and your family become victims. Most people focus on the kitchen when it comes to fire safety. They make sure their fire alarm systems include smoke and fire detectors in the kitchen as well as fire extinguishers. Most people already know they should: · never leave the kitchen while cooking · never wear loose clothing around burners or gas flames · always carefully watch splattering oils during frying · never have paper, plastic or other flammables near burners However, the majority of homeowners stop there. Unfortunately, we all have fire hazards throughout our homes. Each room needs to be given due attention in order to prevent fires from occurring. Installing fire alarms is a great idea, but you can't stop there. To be thorough, use the following checklist to conduct a room-by-room survey. Once you're finished, you can feel much more confident that you and your family are safe from potential fires. Living Room ___ Fireplace has a screen, glass door or other protective device to prevent sparks from exiting the fireplace. ___ Matches and lighters are stored in a locked cabinet if small children are in the home. ___ The fireplace has been inspected annually and cleaned by a professional as needed. Garage or Outdoor Area ___ Chemicals (including fertilizers) are locked and out of reach of children. ___ Gasoline and kerosene are stored outside the home in a cool place in properly ventilated containers. ___ Grills are kept at least two feet away from anything flammable including bushes and tree branches. ___ Grills have been cleaned of all grease drippings, inside and out. All Rooms ___ Cigarettes are dipped in water before being disposed of. ___ Candles are never left unattended. ___ Space heaters are kept several feet away from curtains and drapes, newspapers, magazines, books, blankets, towels or other flammables. ___ Electrical outlets are not overloaded. ___ Power cords are in good condition and are not frayed. When you take just an hour or two to inspect your home, you can dramatically reduce your chances of falling victim to a fire. Alarm systems are a tremendous help in times of trouble, but by taking a few preventative steps, you greatly reduce the likelihood of an accident happening in your home
Efficient strategy to have good links
Google is the most powerful search engine; more than 80% of users are finding high quality and relevant information with Google. This is the reason why maintaining high quality information is an essential condition for search engines. High quality sites must have the place they deserve. There are some techniques allowing a site to have a high ranking; using inbound links is a very efficient way to do it. The more inbound links a site has, the higher its rank. But the inbound links number is a real factor to determine the site’s quality. A low quality site can build an inbound links system to gain a high place in Google’s lists. How do you make the difference between the normal and irregular inbound links? The link farms must be avoided at any cost. Google has methods to detect them and punish the unnatural links owner. It is really difficult to be rehabilitated after a similar mistake. It is wrong to have links to sites that are not logically connected to the main one. Links from irrelevant sites to the main site can be followed by a warning sign from Google. A penalty can arrive if Google detects the main site included in a group of interconnected sites. Another problem is to have reciprocal links; it is very probable that Google algorithms will disagree with this technique. Google has a new paradigm when looking at linking relations. It seems that the quality of incoming and outgoing links is now very important. A smart campaign to have good links is vital for the web site’s ranking. Search engines are making a distinction between links. There are important links, more valuable than the others. The best choice is to have links from highly ranked web sites. There is one more essential condition: the highly ranked websites must also have topics related to the referenced site. A popular solution is to build a links page; it is a page containing links to the other sites linking to the referenced site. Some web designers are also providing the HTML code that makes the links construction easy. It is also useful to create a links creation campaign. This can be done using the non-competitive, high ranked sites. If there is a links page, the referenced site can add its link there too. After building a links page, you may want to consider joining linking directories. By doing this you have access to thousands upon thousands of websites that may relate to your own as well as having a high PR. To start linking your websites to attain a higher PR, go to: o MyLinkMachine Downloading Google toolbar is a solution to see the page’s rank when browsers are used for different purposes. By doing this, you will increase your chances of your website getting noticed by Google and, therefore, getting a higher Page Rank. It s a habit
Do you sometimes have the feeling that you're running into the same obstacles over and over again? Many of my conflicts have the same feel to them, like "Hey, I think I've been here before," but I can't figure out how I wound up in the same place. The situation is different, but the conflict feels the same. I first read this poem in "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche. When I "Googled" it, I found fourteen pages of links. It's clearly a favorite with many people; I know it speaks volumes to me. "Autobiography in Five Chapters" 1) I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk I fall in. I am lost . . . I am hopeless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out. 2) I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I'm in the same place. But it isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. 3) I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in . . . it's a habit My eyes are open I know where I am It is my fault. I get out immediately. 4) I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk I walk around it 5) I walk down another street. Does this feel familiar? I am ready to learn that lesson! I'm sure that I've changed. I can see that hole coming a mile away. This time it will be different. I still end up falling in. Tired, sad and angry, I drag myself up once again. What was I supposed to learn here? I thought I learned that the last time. Some conflicts seem to take years to unravel, but if we stay tuned, and our purpose is to look with curiosity and awareness, we will find the moment when we can step around the hole. As I write, thinking about a recent stumble of my own, I am smiling a bit. From a distance, I watch myself drop into the hole - one I know well - and it's kind of funny. And perhaps that is the way out - to laugh more often, to "love our mistakes," as my friend says. I've heard it said that eventually we will laugh at all our mistakes - the trick is to laugh sooner. When I can laugh as I climb out of the hole, I'm on my way to finding the route around it, or better yet, that alternate street.

Las vegas how to have non gambling related fun
Last month, my wife, Anne Doe, took me to Las Vegas because she had to go for a business convention. Needless to say, she writes for an guide to casinos and I hate gambling. But then, she likes it and this supports us too, so I went along without any hassle. At first I was depressed, but then as I asked around and looked around, I ended up having more fun in Las Vegas than I would have thought. And no. I did not enter a single casino while I was there. Entertainment: One of the greatest things about Las Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City (but especially Las Vegas) is the number of shows that are available. You can get to watch top class comedians like Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Tim Allen and even the likes of Bill Cosby and Chris Rock. If you are into music you can watch female singers like Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Beyonc?, male performers like Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Snoopy Dog and bands like Oasis and Bon Jovi. I could go on and on but the list is endless. If you are into magic you can watch magicians like David Copperfield do their thing meters from you. Whatever you like, you can find it here from Western music to oldies to Jazz, Rock, Heavy Mettle to Trance. All you have to do is look at the itenary offered during your visit. Food: Chinese to Japanese to Korean to Jewish and even Vegetarian and proper meat eating establishments await your every delight in Vegas. Do not opt for the cheap and oily fried dishes served for free while you play. Stop a while and take in the delightful scenery and smells of East Asian or European dishes. What is wondrous is that you get to see man's ability to mix. A real melting pot if I may say so myself. But is that all what casino cities like Las Vegas are about? Do you have to remain in the city to really and truly enjoy your stay? No. Here are some of the better attractions you must see on your visit to Vegas: Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon: Book yourself a seat on any of the many sightseeing tours available and go and watch the architectural marvel that is Hoover Dam built over the Grand canyon which is also a grand sight to see by itself. Black Canyon is another must see as is Lake Mead which is so beautiful just because it is a body of water all surrounded by desert-like nature. Colorado River: While looking at the Dam and Canyon is from above, to see the true beauty of the river, you have to go down. The Colorado river is excellent for river-rafting and water sports, but you do not have to take part if it is not your thing. Instead just sit back and enjoy another of nature's marvels. Bonnie Springs: Who can not resist going to one of the old towns like those in the Western gun slinging movies? Your destination needs to be Old Nevada. There you can delight in an old western town right in the middle of Red Rock Canyon. They host western shootouts too so come prepared, partner! Conclusion: I could go on and on about other attractions like the theme park in Circus Circus, the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve and Mt. Charleston but I think you get the picture. In Las Vegas and hate gambling? Do not despair. Just go out and have some clean un-gambling fun.
Health products for better health and weight management
If you struggle with your weight, you might feel that losing weight and being healthy takes only a few months of strict diet and exercise. Though dieting can bring short-term results, the only true way to maintain your weight for the long term and be healthier is to improve your daily diet. These tips provide simple ways to do this along with some types of health products that can enhance your weight loss efforts. First: Know Where You Stand Before you get started, realize there's a need and where you stand with your weight and health. Do you need to lose X amount of pounds? Do you want to tone your body? Get a weight scale and/or measuring tape. Weigh yourself and write down your starting weight. Use the tape measure to measure in inches around your waist, upper arm, thigh, and neck. Taking measurements will help you know if you're losing inches even if you haven't lost any pounds yet. Weigh or take measurements only once a week so you won't become too anxious about daily fluctuations. Second: Begin Incorporating Healthier Foods Your daily diet should consist of a healthy portion of fruits and vegetables along with moderate portions from the other food groups including bread, meat, and dairy products. Many dieticians recommend at least five fruits and vegetables per day. These can easily be added to your diet by substituting a fruit or two for desert or a mid-afternoon snack, and by always cooking a couple of vegetables along with your meat and bread at lunch and dinner. Breakfast is a great time to fit in cereal and milk or eggs, grits, and cheese along with toast. The great thing is these are foods that are easily accessible at any grocery without spending a fortune on high-priced diet foods and pre-packaged foods. During summer months, frequent a local produce stand for fresh fruits and vegetables. If you eat out often, choose restaurants that serve vegetables with your meat, and opt for at least one green leafy vegetable each time you dine out. Only, be sure to watch portion sizes at restaurants. Some restaurants will give you double the amount you actually need! The benefits of fruits and vegetables are remarkable. Studies show that these foods contain the vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy life and successful weight management. They enhance both women's health and men's health without the harmful side effects of many diet pills or strict, unhealthy dieting. They are also filled with antioxidants and fibers to help your body's immune and digestive systems. Third: Enhance Your Diet with Nutritional Supplements Even when eating healthier, this doesn't mean you can't benefit from nutritional supplements. Nutritional supplements can help boost your weight loss naturally while promoting better help. They can boost your immune system and help you get all the needed vitamins, minerals, and herbs for your daily diet. Be mindful that nutritional supplements are not meant to replace healthy eating or certain meals of the day. They are meant to add to the benefits of a healthy diet. The types of nutritional supplements and health products to look for are those that are natural and/or those that meet your specific supplement needs. There are a number of health products on the market for multi-vitamin needs or to enhance weight loss, sleep, digestion, and the immune system. Some companies (such as Unicity's Bios Life) offer a variety of health products to meet individual needs. The health products are often available in the form of a pill or capsule, nutritional shakes, or health drinks. These methods may seem simple, but adding them to your daily diet can be difficult if you're always on the go. Try adding one healthy food at a time or substituting one meal or snack at a time with healthier choices. Gradually increase your fruit and vegetable intake, and find ways to carry healthy foods with you when you're on the go. Hint: Sandwich bags can be lifesavers! Also, start out with a nutritional supplement. This can help you get on the right track as you add new foods to your diet. Once you start noticing a difference in your health and weight, you'll be encouraged to continue eating healthy and to take your nutritional supplements. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll feel just by making these simple diet changes!
Managing risk the disaster plan that you will need
A very important factor in any business is how you manage risk – yet it is a factor that is often ignored by home businesses. You have to realise that any time you start a business, you are taking the risk that the business might fail. What experienced people do is shield themselves from risk at every opportunity, to make sure that they can keep a business going for months on the brink of disaster, and wind it down gracefully if it really has to go under. You need to have a plan for what you’re going to do if your business looks like it’s going bankrupt. Are you going to borrow more money, if you can? Sell your car? Raise prices? Get rid of staff? Done right, you should have a good package of ‘rescue measures’ that really do have a chance of rescuing the business. Borrowing. If you need to borrow more to keep your business afloat, take great pains to avoid looking desperate. Act like your business is moderately successful but needs more investment, and you’re far more likely to succeed in getting more funding. Bye-Bye Staff. This is a bad idea, but not always a terrible one. In a home business, you presumably only take on staff because you have enough business to cover it, don’t you? So it makes perfect sense to get rid of the staff when things start to go wrong and go back to doing it all yourself. Price Hike. When your business is in trouble, there are few things guaranteed to destroy it faster than a price rise. Just don’t do it, however tempting it might be – cut costs instead. If you absolutely must raise prices, do it by scaling back what you get for your money in each of your price ranges, without actually raising the prices. I know of a struggling bus company that kept its fares the same for years but gradually started to run fewer buses and send them all over town, making journeys take longer. People reacted a little badly to the longer journeys, but it was nowhere near the scandal that there would have been if prices had risen. Keep Staff Pay Aside. Whatever you do, make sure to keep staff pay separate from the other business finances, and pay it out immediately if the business looks to be heading for trouble with its creditors. It is far better to be paying your staff on the last day than to be giving all that money to the creditors. Leaving staff unpaid will destroy your reputation, not to mention hurting a lot of innocent people. The ‘Closing Down’ Sale. If you plan it well, your last day in business might not be so bad. Just make sure everyone knows that you’re closing down for real, but still price everything ever-so-slightly above cost. In this way, you can avoid the drastic loss-making ‘Everything Must Go!’ mentality, and come out of your business the same way as you would if you’d decided to shut it down that day for some other reason. Selling Your Business On. If you’re shrewd about it, you might be able to keep your business going long enough to sell it to someone who could turn it around. There’s nothing dishonest about this route – it’s the one most big companies take if things start to go wrong. You might even find that one of your competitors is willing to buy, even if only for your established customer base. It’s Up to You. Disaster plans are very personal, and they depend a lot on how much risk you’re willing to put on yourself. If you do things the sensible way, then you’ll go as far as you can to avoid selling or borrowing against any of your own assets just to keep a business afloat. On the other hand, if you’re really determined and a bit of a risk-taker, putting some things of your own at stake might buy you enough time to recover from whatever hit your business. It’s a little like playing poker: are you going to be the guy who walks away and leaves his money on the table, or are you going to throw your car or house keys onto the table and raise the stakes? That’s risk management for you.
Senior ticked for walking too slow others try roller skates
An 82-year-old woman was recently issued a ticket in California for crossing a street too slowly. A police officer, who arrived on a motorcycle, told her she was obstructing traffic – and issued her a summons for $114. Responding to the uproar caused by the curious traffic ticket, the municipality has begun to wonder if it should work out ways to help seniors cross streets without fear of incurring a penalty. It is, of course, much too optimistic to hope that the municipality and the nation at large will speed to their rescue with such startling innovations as walk signs that last longer. As a result, seniors, alarmed by the pricy citation, particularly those who are living on social security, are taking steps of their own, as they frantically search for ways to hurry along. Of course, electric wheelchairs have long been an option. But many simply don’t see themselves in the undeniably helpful items, at least, not until they encounter accidents due to the other resources they’ve been turning to, for instance, roller skates. We also understand that bicycles have been selling briskly, particularly near retirement communities. Of course, those who are fortunate enough to live with more able partners have the luxury of looking into other options, such as little red wagons and, in rural areas, wheelbarrows. In a nutshell, seniors are turning to every possible mode of expedition they can think of, which generally means they’re equipped with the age-old facilitation of wheels. While these alternative modes of transportation might offer suitable answers during balmier times, there is some concern about what to do when snow and ice cover the ground. Among the more daring sorts, there is talk of skis, while others are considering ice skates. Until then, we can at least be glad that the dear recipient of the instigating ticket was not also issued points. Enough of those, and she’d have to be concerned about losing her walking license.
Compromised positions
There is no denying that the sports business these days is awash in bright lights ... Quite often, though, the same can't be said for the people or practices involved. The passage of time, the fading of origins and the constant superseding of slang can combine to cause some curious contemporary contexts. To start, have you ever really thought about how pedantic the word 'quarterback' is? When the innovators who metamorphosed rugby into gridiron football were telling players where to stand, it was only logical to have someone placed all the way behind the line called a 'fullback.' By then, soccer already had two defending positions which used that term, so they surely provided the acceptable sporting frame of reference. For the gridiron game's founding fathers to next place another player halfway between the fullback and the linemen and call him a 'halfback' made sense, too. But, perhaps they overdid this theme by sticking a third player halfway between the halfback and the linemen and arriving at the unfortunately obvious titling conclusion. It only figures that such a mathematically correct --- but verbally clumsy --- location of a player would turn out to describe the most important position in the game. Any sports fan has heard that word a thousand times and surely doesn't think twice anymore about what it means or how silly it sounds. The rest of the salient world, though, is left to wonder what minds like those had named their kids. On the other hand, the venerable game of cricket doesn't even think the word 'silly' sounds silly. Players' positions in that game are also defined by their location, and they actually have a series of spots called 'silly point,' 'silly mid-off' and 'silly mid-on.' In this case, it's truth in advertising. That's because they're placed so close to the batsman that solid contact from a full swing could result in serious bodily harm from a scorching line drive, which means that someone would have to be absolutely foolhardy to play there. Or, maybe just silly. (Just so you're aware that all cricketers aren't that crazy, the 'silly' locations are only occupied when the fielding team believes the batsman will only take defensive swings to protect his wicket.) Certain topics just weren't discussed in public a century ago. So, a gridiron position like 'tight end' or a rugby position like 'hooker' never gave anyone a second thought. That was then. I'm assuming those athletes frame their conversations with non-fans more carefully now. There are times when even the sports media should think deeper about their choice of words. Sports fans often have to do a double-take at headlines being thrust before them. Here's a recent offering from ESPN: "Panel to Look at Claims Against Skeleton Coach." While it might have been tempting to muse if the story was about some incident after a play was 'long dead,' only a hardcore Winter Olympics maven would recognize that a coach for the headfirst sledding events is in some sort of trouble. The sleighs involved in that discipline acquired the name 'skeleton' by a logic that was similar to that of the resultant term for putting a player a quarter of the way between the fullback and the center: the sled involved is literally a bare-bones equivalent of a bobsleigh or a luge, and the engineers must have gotten to it before the marketers did. Of course, if you've ever seen this sport in action, you could easily believe that its moniker was derived from what was left of an athlete if he ever lost control of his sled at 70mph. Given the apparent discord between sports terminology and the perception of those same words and phrases by the rest of the world, it's not surprising that sometimes, ordinary words can be a cause of confusion to those who have spent their lives in the sporting arena. In the late 1960s, two former gridiron football stars-turned-broadcasters --- New York Giants great, Pat Summerall, and Philadelphia Eagles receiver, Tom Brookshier --- were covering a game involving the Washington Redskins. At the time, those two were better known for socializing before the game than for preparing themselves for the broadcast. Brookshier, especially, seemed to depend on the depth charts and player profiles laid before them in the booth, rather than doing his own research. During the course of the game, a kickoff came to a relatively unknown Redskin named Herb Mul-Key. He got a couple of key initial blocks, found a seam and scampered for a substantial return. It definitely warranted a comment from the analyst, which was Brookshier's role. However, he clearly didn't know anything about Herb Mul-Key. All he could do was look for something of note on the player-bio card, and he thought he found something. "I see," he announced, "that Mul-Key went to No-Knee College. I've never heard of that school." Summerall's pause was extended. Finally, with subtle exasperation, he finally made the correction. "I believe the word is 'None,' Tom." Brookshire was truly a man trapped in sports. I guess that meant, to him, the cue card had something in common with the term for another rugby position: It was a tight head prop.

A vending machine distributor is a person that sells and delivers vending machines of all kinds. If you are planning to get started in the vending machine business, you do need to start with a distributor in order to get the machines that you need. The distributor could be a single person that sells the vending machines out of his/her basement or it could be a large company with salespeople and a catalog that you can browse through. The vending machine distributor works with the vending machine manufacturers to bring you the machines you want to use in your business. When you want to start a vending machine business of your own, the first thing you need to do is find a vending machine distributor that has the type of vending machines you want to start with. The problem is knowing how and where to find the distributor and what vending machines are right for you. Many of the distributors you contact can give you valuable advice about what types of vending machines would be best for your area. The distributors that deal with your area will also be able to give you advice about getting into this type of business opportunity. This is where a vending machine distributor can really help you. These people know the manufacturers of all the different types of machines and may be able to put you in contact with someone that has used vending machines for sale that are in excellent condition. Breast pills
: Everybody in this world is constantly trying to outwit each other by their physique, look, skills and intelligence. Human beings are looking for perfections in every aspect of their lives. Women are not far behind. They want to present themselves in the best possible manner to be noticed by others. A woman’s beauty strikes the mind first and nice and firm breasts provide a significant input to make that impression. Small and under developed breasts have been causes of concern for women. Though breast implant treatment is available, they are out of reach for an ordinary woman. So breast pills are most sought after solutions to overcome this problem. Breast pills are made of natural ingredients like herbs, plants and plant extracts. These ingredients improve hormone levels in the body that aid in the natural development of breast tissues and give the breasts a firmer and fuller look. This formula is showing good results and women have reported of good improvements in their cup sizes in 3 months. Though the pills contain some side effects, these are temporary.
Users can negate these side effects if they comply with the guidelines and precautions set by the manufacturers. Patience is the keyword here if users want to derive maximum benefits from the products.
The business of publishing
Congratulations, you're published! But what exactly does it mean to be "published"? Besides the fact that your work is finally in print and your college alumni has asked to interview you for their newsletter it also means fame and fortune, right? Well, ok, maybe not on the level of J. K. Rowling, but at the very least you can expect a call from Oprah, right? I hate to be the one to break it to you but you're probably not even on her radar screen. The truth about publishing is really stranger than fiction and the truth is: getting published is only half the battle. The other half is to keep your reality check in balance so it doesn't bounce. While publishing is all about creative expression, it's also about business and it's those business savvy authors who will succeed in the end. Now you don't have to be an MBA to be a keen business person, you simply have to understand that the choices you make relative to your books future should be based on strategies that will enhance sales not just drain your pocketbook. So, how do you do this? First, take a long, hard look at your reader. At Author Marketing Experts, we always create a reader profile for each book we promote. This reader profile will tell us where to find buyers for the books we represent. Taking this first step helps us sort through our choices when it comes to book promotion and make decisions on behalf of our authors that are sound and will help leverage sales. There are times when it's a waste of resources to do a nationwide radio or TV promotion. In fact, some of our programs don't include any outreach to broadcast media. Why? Because as alluring as it might seem to appear on the Today Show, what's the point if your audience doesn't watch morning TV? And, if your audience isn't watching this show, the chances are slim they'll even consider you anyway. What? More rejection? Who needs it! As you embark on or continue your campaign, ask yourself a few tough questions. First, what's your ultimate goal for this book? If it's just to give away at family reunions, that's great! But then you'll probably want to nix any marketing. If your book is an arm of your business and you have speaking engagements lined up through the end of the year. You probably don't need to spend a lot on marketing since most of your sales will come from your speaking engagements (i. e. back of the room sales). On the other hand, if you wrote this book to grow your business or to leverage your credibility then you will probably want to dial yourself into your industry through enhanced media exposure. For fiction authors this area becomes a little tricky. First, you need to determine your long term goals. By long term we mean: do you want to stay in this business or was this book just "something you wanted to do." If it's a hobby, then treat it as such but if this is going to be your career, then you need to keep your message out there on a continual basis, through venues such as author events, talks, signings, print and broadcast media. Make sure the choices you make, make sense for your book and aren't just made because you've always dreamt of being on Oprah. I've known authors lured into inappropriate marketing plans by big, flashy names and promises of stardom, wasting thousands of valuable marketing dollars and heading in a direction that wasn't right for them. If you're serious about your work, ready to let go of your muse and face the task at hand with some business savvy, then you're really ready to get published. Below are some guidelines that will help further your success! 1) Reader profile: create one of these at the beginning of your marketing campaign and keep refining it as you move through the process. Refine and redefine who and where your audience is and how to get to them. 2) Time commitment: determine what you can and can't reasonably do. If you have a full time job it probably doesn't make a lot of sense to commit yourself to forty hours of marketing a week unless your boss is on vacation. 3) Investment: how much are you willing to invest in your future? Are you willing to invest money without seeing much in return knowing that you are building a foundation or do you want to see immediate monetary results? Most authors don't see a return on their investment for a year or more. Are you committed enough to yourself or your project to keep this investment going? 4) Reality check: what's realistic for the industry you're in? Are you latching onto a fad or something with more longevity? Are you getting into a brand new market that will require lots of reader education? Or are you trying to go mainstream with a non-mainstream topic? While this is an admirable goal, it can be like swimming upstream. 5) Budget: while we encourage authors to invest in their future, we've also seen a number of people go into heavy debt, quit their jobs and even sell their homes just to promote their book. While that kind of dedication is certainly admirable, remember that although you have the potential to make a great deal of money it's not going to be overnight. The lure here is of course that "If I stick with it, this next sale will make me famous." Well, maybe or maybe not. If you've been plugging away for a while without any significant success get a professional to give you some honest, constructive feedback about your plan, your market, and your book. It might be that a poorly designed cover is the reason you're not making sales, or a topic that's fallen off of the public's radar screen. In the meantime as you're waiting to hit the big time you'll still need a place to sleep and Uncle Vinnie's couch will get old real quick. 6) Burnout: we hear this term often, even to the point of being overused. What we're really talking about here is author burnout. We've found that the average author only markets their book for ninety days. That means ninety days of day and night marketing, radio interviews at 3am and a book signing every weekend. On day ninety-one they are so tired, so discouraged and so broke they quit. You can avoid this by giving yourself realistic goals and a realistic timeframe in which to complete them. There's nothing in the world like seeing your book in print. If approached realistically, objectively and with sound business sense, it can be one of the most exciting times in your life.
